Every time we receive a complaint from a viewer or listener we assess it against the Broadcasting Code.
The code sets standards for television and radio shows and broadcasters have to follow these rules.
If we find a programme has broken those rules, then it will be found in breach of that code.
We will also, in serious cases, consider further action
World Cup
In June Ofcom received 823 complaints after coverage of England’s first World Cup match against the USA on ITV1’s high definition channel was interrupted by an unscheduled advert break.
This break occurred within the first four minutes of the match and just before England scored the first goal.
A ten second sponsorship advert for Hyundai was played out on ITV1 HD followed by a series of black frames lasting a further 11 seconds.
Steven Gerrard goal
The interruption meant viewers watching the match on the HD service in England and Wales did not see England captain Steven Gerrard scoring the first goal of the game.
Those watching the match on ITV1’s standard definition service – the vast majority of viewers – were unaffected.
