Spam texts and how to stop them

No-one wants to have their mobile phone bombarded with spam texts advertising products and services they don’t want.
But did you know that it is against the law for companies to send you marketing texts unless you have previously given them permission? Ofcom’s comprehensive nuisance calls guide includes more information about spam text messages and how to stop them.
It looks at the main types of texts being sent at the moment and explains how you can quickly report the texts to your network operator, which may be able to prevent further messages from the originating number.
There is also information on how you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO which is responsible for enforcing the rules on marketing texts.
The ICO has powers to investigate any suspected breaches of the regulations and has today fined two owners of a marketing company which bombarded consumers with millions of unlawful spam text messages a total of £440,000.
It follows an 18-month investigation into the activities of Tetrus Telecoms, which is jointly owned by Christopher Niebel and Gary McNeish.
The ICO probe found the company was using unregistered 'pay as you go' SIM cards to send out as many as 840,000 illegal text messages a day.
Ofcom’s nuisance calls guide was put together in association with the ICO, other regulators and consumer organisations.
It looks at the different types of nuisance calls and messages and includes advice on what action you can take to protect yourself and who you can complain to.
